Welcome to the Birmingham Chapter of Executive Women International® website. Being the representative of a member firm in EWI means constantly interacting with some of the top members of the sharpest firms in our area. As such, I am honored and privileged to serve as the 2009-2010 Chapter President along with my board of directors and advisors. Their commitment to EWI® is an asset to both me and the Birmingham Chapter.
EWI® is a non-profit organization that was founded in California in 1938 under the name of Executives’ Secretaries, Inc. In May of 1939 the Los Angeles Chapter was chartered; in 1964 the first Canadian Chapter was chartered and in 1992 the first European Chapter was chartered. In 1977 the name was changed to Executive Women International® reflecting the international expansion and recognizing the changing roles and diverse careers of women in business. Today EWI® has over 3000 member firms and 3500 representatives.
The Birmingham Chapter of EWI® was chartered in 1960 and has grown to be recognized as a premier organization for promoting member firms, providing personal and professional growth opportunities for the representatives and for our involvement in the community. The geographic boundaries of the Birmingham Chapter include Jefferson, Shelby, Tuscaloosa, Blount, Talladega, St. Clair and Walker counties.
Each year we award scholarships to high school juniors and to adults going back to school. Last year we awarded $16,000 in scholarships. We have a Reading Rally every year to promote the importance of literacy and education to young girls and boys. We are very proud of all of these programs that give back to our community.
Membership is extended by invitation only. We have a “posting” process for membership when a firm indicates an interest in joining EWI®. If there are no objections by membership, the firm is extended an invitation to become a member in EWI®. We invite you to contact us regarding possible membership. We would love to discuss the many benefits for both the firm and representative.
Thank you for your interest in the Birmingham Chapter of Executive Women International®. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us. Heather Knighten President
